Profile (Personal and Political): Dr Kgosi Maepa
1. Introduction [Early life]
Dr. Kgosi Maepa was born on the 7th August 1977 in Sharpeville, Vereeniging. He grew up and attended Primary (Kopanong), Higher Primary (Titima) and High School (Thuto Lore) in the Township.
He was first exposed to liberation struggle politics in 1992 at the age of 15 when he became involved in self-defense units [SDU] called “Matthew Goniwe” (German); in an area of Sharpeville called ‘Ditentsheng’ and participated in many combat activities.
The SDU’s were structures in Townships created by the ANC underground and COSAS to protect the community against IFP attacks.
In 1993 and 1994 his education was temporarily interrupted due to SDU activities. In 1995, Kgosi moved to Motetema and finished his High School education.
In Motetema, Kgosi rejoined politics and become a member of the ANCYL branch, thats when he formally attended his first ANCYL Provincial Congress [Northern Province] in 1996 at Dr. CN Phathudi as a delegate of Motetema.
2. Early leadership roles
Kgosi advanced to Higher education at the University of Pretoria, he started as a Medical Student and later dropped out from Medical School to study for a BSc degree.
After completion of his BSc he was readmitted to Medical School but opted to continue with post graduate studies and lost interest in the Medical profession.
During his studies at University, Kgosi mainly participated in residence activities as a leader. Through residence committee leadership, he was sent to the Student Representative Council (SRC) and became a member of the Executive – he was also a member of the ANCYL on campus.
During his tenure as a member of the SRC, he served as a member of the University Senate and many other student leadership structures.
After completing his first degree, he was appointed to be executive assistant to the Dean of Student and soon thereafter as Head of Residence Management.
The University had specially recruited Kgosi to be the person who attends to student and parents complains, student development and placement in residences for mainly African students .
The idea was for Kgosi to champion racial integration and diversity management on campus and in residences.
In 2004, Kgosi was successfully recruited by the University of Cape Town, an offer which the University of Pretoria countered.
When Kgosi was just 26 years and finalizing his Master’s degree, he was made a Residence Head at Savana and then Boekenhout Men’s Residences.
The latter was a position reserved for Senior Staff at the University [i.e. ideally Dr’s and Prof’s]. This made Kgosi the youngest Residence Head to be appointed at the University.
In 2003, Kgosi was awarded an International Scholarship to complete his Master’s dissertation at University of Wisconsin in the United States of America in 2004.
While working with the Dean of students, Kgosi was also appointed as a Lecturer [Business and Professional ethics] and was teaching in “Tuks after 5” classes.
This meant that Kgosi had three jobs simultaneously at the University, as an Executive Assistant to the Dean, Residence Head and Lecturer.
Kgosi also worked part time as a Consultant in Business and professional ethics in big organisations.
In 2005 Kgosi registered for his PhD and decided to drop it when he was appointed as a young Executive at Absa Bank.
3. Qualifications (Summary)
Kgosi holds a BSc and BSc (Honours) degrees from the University of Pretoria (UP), as well as an MPhil (Workplace Ethics / Business and Professional Ethics) from the same institution in collaboration with University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM) in Wisconsin USA – course work was done at UP and dissertation research and writing at UWM.
His MPhil dissertation (Passed with Distinction) dealt with the impact of Corporate Governance, Business Ethics and Intellectual Property Rights in Africa.
He also completed a Diploma in Business Management (Passed with Distinctions) and is also qualified as a Registered Financial Planner.
Kgosi also completed a Ph.D. (Public Affairs) in the School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) at University of Pretoria. His research interests are in the areas of Good Governance; Performance Monitoring and Evaluation in Metropolitan Municipalities.
In 2012, Kgosi received the SPMA Director’s Award for the Best Achievement overall in the Ph.D. (Public Affairs) course work and the top student in the whole school [SPMA].
Kgosi is one of the few students in the School's history to complete a PhD in 24 months after his research proposal was approved at first attempt.
Kgosi has been invited in local and international Conferences as a speaker and contributor.
In 2017, Kgosi agreed to engage in post-Doctoral study, conduct research en route to becoming an Associate Professor.

5. Political work and Activism in the ANCYL and ANC
In 2002, Kgosi rejoined politics on a full time basis as an ANCYL activist. He became a member of the ANCYL in Tshwane Inner City. His activism was heightened in 2006 when the ANCYL in Tshwane took center stage to position young leaders in the Capital City.
The ANCYL activities culminated to two critical Conference of the ANCYL Tshwane in 2008 [Bela Bela] and an ANC Conference in 2009 [St George 1], where he was elected into the Regional Executive Committee [REC].
After the Conference in October 2009, Kgosi was seconded and deployed by the REC to be an Advisor to the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane.
In 2011, Kgosi was recruited by the then Provincial Secretary of the ANC and now Premier of Gauteng Cde David Makhura, to be a Director in his office to manage performance, monitoring and evaluation of ANC deployees in Gauteng Provincial Government and ANC led municipalities across the province (i.e Premier, MECs, MPLs, Executive Mayors and Councillors).
Kgosi is an avid writer and contributor to ANC publications in particular Umrabulo. Moreover, he is a fulltime student of OR Tambo, Kgosi has put together seminal work on a concept he termed Oliver Tambo – Legacy, Paradigm and Thought [OR-LPT], this is work about the life and times of OR Tambo and his leadership qualities.
In 2008, Kgoši was approached by Mr. Coetzee Bester (A former leader of the National Party School and a colleague from the University of Pretoria) to be part of the FW De Klerk foundation and advise on how to forge relationships with the ANC (racial integration policies/ Non-racialism) and understand it's policies better. Due to active politics and election into ANC structures, Kgoši resign from the board in 2010.
6. Business and Entrepreneurship [2016 - Current]
After 15 years of working experience in the Private and Public sectors, Kgosi started his own businesses. His main focus and interests are in Property Development and Investments; Management Consulting and Revenue Enhancement programmes in local government. His companies are:
